En este tour conocemos los bailes, las palabras y los platos de nuestros antepasados en la Hacienda La Esperanza en Manatí, y cómo su cultura sigue viva en nuestra cotidianidad. Acompáñanos en nuestro recorrido tradicional, trabajado para vincular nuestra temática de temporada con la historia y la naturaleza de esta reserva natural.

Árboles Campeones Hacienda La Esperanza, Manatí
Son los árboles más grandes, altos y viejos de todo Puerto Rico. ¡Algunos están creciendo desde antes que llegaran los españoles! Queremos saber dónde están y porqué han podido vivir tanto tiempo. Aventúrate en la profundidad de los bosques o por los pastizales de áreas naturales a través de las islas en la búsqueda de los Árboles Campeones de cada especie. Sal afuera, ¡haz algo distinto! Nota: Solamente para participantes de 14 años en adelante. Deben estar dispuestos a hacer tareas manuales y/o físicas, caminar por terrenos irregulares, y a exponerse a condiciones variables en el campo, como los cambios en el clima y la flora y fauna del lugar, entre otros.

Follow the historical trajectory of Hacienda La Esperanza Nature Reserve in Manatí, one of Puerto Rico’s most prosperous sugar plantations during the 19th Century, where the main driving force behind sugar production was slavery. During this tour, you will visit the different structures that make up La Esperanza’s Historical Site, including the Sugar Mill and its unique 1861 West Point Foundry steam engine. Birding with a Purpose at Hacienda La Esperanza, Manatí
Every Saturday at 08:00 am.
Your eyes and ears will be your best guides during this
bird-watching tour at Hacienda La Esperanza in Manatí, where you will learn to
identify species of birds found in the area by paying attention to their
distinctive songs and plumage. Saturdays at 8:00am by reservation only. Pay your
reservation online and save $2 per person. Facilities for the handicapped are
very limited. It is important that visitors are capable of walking by
themselves, in the outdoors over uneven terrain, during a period of an hour and
a half. Level 2.

Karst Trail at Hacienda La Esperanza Nature Reserve, Manatí
Discover some of the Karst Region’s characteristic geologic formations during this tour through the southern part of Hacienda La Esperanza Nature Reserve in Manatí, where you will walk through some of the limestone hills (mogotes) that make up the mountainous area of the Northern Karst Belt and discover the main source of the subterranean waters that feed the valley. You will also meet some of the plant and animal species that inhabit
these ecosystems, such as the cabbage angelin, santa-maria, and swamp bloodwood
trees, and bird species like the Puerto Rican vireo, the Puerto Rican
yellow-shouldered blackbird, the Puerto Rican lizard-cuckoo, the Puerto Rican
bullfinch, and Adelaide’s warbler. Facilities for the handicapped are very
limited. It is important that visitors are capable of walking by themselves, in
the outdoors over uneven terrain, during a prolonged period of time.

Coastal Trail at Hacienda la Esperanza Nature Reserve, Manatí
Enjoy a pleasant walk along the coast of Hacienda La
Esperanza Nature Reserve in Manatí while you discover the biodiversity that
inhabits the area. This tour offers you the ideal opportunity to familiarize
yourself with several ecosystems characteristic to the northern coast of Puerto
Rico, such as coastal forests, marshlands, cemented dunes and different types of
beaches. You will also get to observe some of the native and migratory birds in
the area, such as the brown pelican, the osprey and sandpipers. Facilities for
the handicapped are very limited. It is important that visitors are capable of
walking by themselves, in the outdoors over uneven terrain, during a prolonged
period of time. NOTE: This Encounter with Nature is only offered in

Nature and History of the Río Grande of Manatí in Hacienda La
Esperanza
Submerge yourself in the history of the Río Grande of
Manatí, one of the longest rivers in Puerto Rico. This body of water runs from
Barranquitas through the Central Mountain Range, until it finally reaches the
Atlantic Ocean. Located in the west side of the Hacienda La Esperanza Nature
Reserve in Manatí, this river played a key role as the main transportation route
for the sugar produced at this 19th Century plantation. During this tour, you
will learn about the ecological, economic, historical and cultural importance of
this river, as well as the impact that some introduced species have had on this
ecological system, such as the Mimosa pigra, a species of invasive shrub, and
the mongoose. Facilities for the handicapped are very limited. It is important
that visitors are capable of walking by themselves, in the outdoors over uneven
terrain, during a prolonged period of time. NOTE: This Encounter with Nature is
only offered in Spanish.
